Meet Our Staff

Since each project and client is so unique, experienced leaders and workers are key to our success. We bring to each client and project a highly dedicated team with extensive industry experience and a long history of working together.

Our average leader in the office has 20+ years with Van Haren Electric. Our average field leader has 15+ years and our average employee has 8+ years with Van Haren Electric. This experience allows us to anticipate potential problems and increase the overall efficiency of our client’s projects.

Brian Van Haren P.E.


Brian has over 40 years experience in the industry, all at Van Haren Electric. Upon graduating with honors from the University of Michigan in 1979 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Brian had already obtained his Master Electrician Licence. Brianʼs experience allows him to bring a unique perspective to projects and leading the company. He has experience in installing and leading projects in the field, estimating, project management and engineering, as well as leading and owning a successful electrical business.

Laura Farrell

Vice President

Laura has more than 30 years experience in the electrical construction industry with designing, estimating, project management and contract administration responsibilities. Laura is a graduate of Michigan State University, BA with honors in Materials & Logistic Management and an AA from Davenport College of Business in Accounting/Computer Programming. Responsibilities include project management, conceptual budgeting, detailed final cost estimates and incorporating value-engineering solutions.

Bill Thomas

Vice President of Operations

Bill joined Van Haren in 1998 after graduating from Lansing Community College with a Criminal Justice Degree. During his tenure he has worked in many roles, including Apprentice, Journeyman, Leadman, Foreman and Project Manager. With over 20 years in the electrical industry he currently holds the title of Vice President of Operations.

Melissa Systema

Accouting Manager

Melissa has 20 years experience in accounting including tool and die, automotive and over 15 years in the construction industry. Melissa graduated with honors from Cornerstone University, B.S. in Business Administration with an Accounting Emphasis. She has led the implementation of new accounting/manufacturing software at two companies. Responsibilities include all accounting functions, budgeting, and human resources. Organization memberships include CFMA, ASA, and ABC.

Joe Easterday

Project Manager

Since joining Van Haren in 2013, Joe has managed a wide range of electrical construction projects in West Michigan. Prior to joining Van Haren Electric, Joe worked for national contractors completing projects across the country in healthcare, industrial, municipal, institutional, and distribution markets as a general contractor and electrical contractor. Joe is a graduate of Purdue University, where he earned a B.S. in Building Construction Management with an additional specialization in Electrical Construction Management.

Russ Dones

Account Manager

Russ has been with the company since 2004 after he graduated from the Michigan State Electrical Technologies program. He has since been well diversified in the electrical field from commercial, industrial and controls to estimating and customer relations. He has recently moved from a Field Small Projects Leader to an Account Manager position.

Todd Tryon

Account Manager

Todd has over 25 years experience in electrical construction, maintenance, and industrial controls. He started his career with Van Haren while attending GRCC’s apprenticeship program. He continued to become a Master Electrician and holds an electrical contractor’s license. Todd recently rejoined the Van Haren team after gaining 17 years experience in Automotive Maintenance/Management and is now in the office as an Account Manager.

Shari Bayer

Human Resources

Shari has a Master’s Degree in Human Resources and Labor Relations from Michigan State University and has over 20 years of experience in her field. Throughout her career, she has worked in construction, manufacturing, service and non-profit organizations bringing her years of experience and wealth of knowledge in a variety of industries to Van Haren Electric. Shari’s Human Resources responsibilities include Employee Relations, Benefit Administration, Training/Apprenticeship, Recruiting and Safety.

Tom Miller

Warehouse and Fleet Manager

Tom has over 25 years experience in the electrical construction industry as Apprentice, Journeyman, Leadman, Foreman, Superintendent and Project Manager. Tom has an encyclopedic knowledge of electrical construction and shares his knowledge with our entire team, providing critical support to our projects. Tom graduated from Western Michigan University, BS Criminal Justice. Tom has been with Van Haren Electric since 1980. Tomʼs primary responsibilities include warehouse and fleet management.
